Scandinavian Ocean Minerals holds exploration permits for four areas in the Bothnian Bay totalling 800 square kilometres. The most recent expedition was carried out between 6 and 17 October together with its partner Sweco.
Analyses of the data collected are now under way. The results will form the basis of the environmental impact assessment, an important step on the way to the application for an extraction permit that Scandinavian Ocean Minerals is to submit to the government in 2025.
The assessment is that 60 of the 80 square kilometres surveyed in the Bothnian Bay show a good occurrence of manganese nodules. The quantity is in line with earlier estimates and much suggests that it is more.
In parallel with analysing data from the expedition, discussions are under way on land, energy and infrastructure matters. A consultation is also to be carried out with government authorities, organisations and the public. The consultation may give recommendations on any additions to the surveys.
