Researcher Rickard Arvidsson, associate professor of environmental systems analysis at Chalmers in Gothenburg, is leading a pioneering project on sustainable sea-based mineral extraction. We at Scandinavian Ocean Minerals are proud to contribute to the project and to this important research.
“The research that has been done on sea-based mineral extraction points to a lower climate impact over the life cycle than extraction on land. But those are studies carried out above all at deep-sea level in the Pacific. We will look specifically at the environment in the Baltic Sea and the North Atlantic, and to a greater extent include aspects such as biodiversity in our studies,” says Rickard Arvidsson.
Scandinavian Ocean Minerals is one of the companies examined in the project. Over four years, Rickard and his colleagues at Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg will analyse data and techniques used to harvest minerals in the Bothnian Bay.
“By collaborating with Scandinavian Ocean Minerals we gain direct access to relevant data to use in our systems analyses. We will also be able to identify methods and techniques that reduce the impact on the environment,” says Rickard Arvidsson.
The project has been financed by the Swedish Energy Agency and also includes Dr Linus Hammar of the University of Gothenburg. Scandinavian Ocean Minerals’ Robert Venema will take part in the project’s reference group.
