KTH gets to the bottom of the pH value

At the KTH Royal Institute of Technology a test has begun that involves measuring at what pH value the nodules on the seabed begin to dissolve. In the Bothnian Bay it varies between 7.5 and 8, but the nodules’ own pH value is 7.45.

The rising carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere means that more carbon dioxide is taken up by the oceans. That in turn leads to increased acidification. So the question is at what pH value the nodules begin to dissolve, and when the pH value in the Bothnian Bay and the Baltic Sea reaches that level.
