Cod and herring are two of the fish species in the Baltic Sea that are threatened. Important for their survival is the availability of the crustaceans Saduria entomon and Monoporeia affinis. Here we at Scandinavian Ocean Minerals see the possibility of improving the situation for all of these species.
Let us take it from the beginning. Monoporeia affinis eats dead algae and plankton that are sediment, the mud itself on the seabed. Once it has become well fed and plump it is in turn eaten by the fish, among them cod and herring. And then the seal eats the fish. The seal too is currently threatened and has too little food, which makes this amphipod an important link between plankton and fish.
We at Scandinavian Ocean Minerals can, with a new method using patented technology, create new habitats for the amphipod. These habitats help threatened fish species find more food.
So when we harvest mineral-rich nodules that are important for the green transition, we are at the same time giving nature a helping hand and contributing to a good and favourable environment for the amphipod.
Now you may be wondering how we do that.
Manganese nodules form a hard seabed. Our model means that we want to pick up these nodules, and as a result we create a softer bottom where the amphipod can dig down and hide, which is important for its survival.
