On March 4-5, International Seabed Authority (ISA) Secretary-General Odunton and Mr. Brockett, an ocean technology expert with the US company SOSI, accompanied by COMRA deputy director He Zongyu and deputy division director Li Xiangyang, along with deputy director Wu Changbin of the National Deep Sea Base Management Center, came to Changsha Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CRIMM) for a research and exchange visit.
General manager Yang Yingliang attended the special technical seminar. In his welcoming remarks, he said the International Seabed Authority has long given strong support to CRIMM’s marine mineral resources development work, and he expressed heartfelt thanks to Secretary-General Odunton for actively supporting China Minmetals’ application for an international seabed reserved area.
Secretary-General Odunton described the ISA’s development history and its main work for the period ahead. He said that with China’s active participation, and through broad international cooperation and exchange, the commercialization of international seabed mineral resources would arrive very soon.
Afterward, Mr. Brockett gave a special report titled “Development of the OMI Nodule Collector and Its Pilot Mining Tests”, Professor Liu Shaojun of Central South University gave a special report titled “Reflections on Deep-Sea Mining and International Cooperation”, and Yang Ning, assistant to the general manager of the company, gave a special report titled “Latest Progress in China’s Deep-Sea Mining Technology and Processes”.
