On 17 June the EU Council of Ministers formally adopted the Nature Restoration Regulation. This law aims to introduce measures to restore at least 20 percent of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.
The regulation sets out specific, legally binding targets and obligations for nature restoration in each of the listed ecosystems, from terrestrial to marine, freshwater and urban ecosystems.
The regulation means that oxygen-free ecosystems in the Baltic Sea also become part of the measures under binding legislation for all EU countries around the Baltic. At least two thirds of oxygen-free sediment surfaces at between 70 and 1,000 metres depth are to be addressed by 2040. That means a seabed area corresponding to at least the size of Lake Vattern is to be oxygenated every year up to 2040, a little over 2,400 square kilometres per year.
An innovative solution developed by us at Scandinavian Ocean Minerals, based on well-proven environmentally friendly technology, creates the conditions for the Baltic Sea to become a living sea with biological diversity once again.
At the same time it opens new possibilities to recover a range of natural resources from the bed of the Baltic. Our solution may come to meet a large part of Sweden’s and the EU’s future need for green carbon, silicon, biogas, hydrogen and silt for the cement and concrete industry.
