We want to do something that is both important and complex. That is why it is decisive to work with researchers who hold the right specialist expertise. For us, Bjorn Glaser, associate professor and head of the Unit of Processes at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, is one of them.
Bjorn, a German metallurgist named after Bjorn Borg, has long experience of metallurgical processes at high temperatures.
“Next year I hope to be able to begin studies that can help Scandinavian Ocean Minerals develop sustainable processes for integrating nodules as an important raw material in the value chain,” he says.
Bjorn Glaser looks forward to developing his collaboration with us together with his dedicated colleagues:
“I see great potential. At present, for example, much of the electrolytic manganese is imported from South Africa and Asia, where it is mined and produced using hydrometallurgical and electrolytic processes, which gives a high environmental impact. If we can find a more sustainable way to extract, for example, ferromanganese from the Swedish seabed, and process it cost-effectively, that would be a significant advance.”
