On November 26, Sun Shuxian, member of the Party leadership group and vice administrator of the State Oceanic Administration, came to Changsha Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CRIMM) for a special research visit. Liu Feng, director of the office of the China Ocean Mineral Resources R&D Association (COMRA), Liu Ningwu, head of the science and technology management department of China Minmetals, CRIMM general manager Yang Yingliang, and Party secretary Xie Jianguo accompanied him throughout.
Vice Administrator Sun Shuxian toured the collector vehicle collection and traveling test ground, the conveying test system, the pressure-resistance testing workshop, the vertical lifting test system, and the mineral smelting test workshop of the State Key Laboratory of Deep-Sea Mineral Resources Development and Utilization Technology. On site he heard briefings from relevant personnel on the construction of the State Key Laboratory and on the development of deep-sea mineral resources development and utilization technology and equipment, and asked in detail about the wave-making function of the test pool, the sea trials of the pump and pipeline conveying system, and the maximum simulated water depth of the pressure-resistance testing equipment.
Vice Administrator Sun fully affirmed the outstanding achievements CRIMM has made in research on ocean mineral resources development technology, and expressed admiration for the researchers who for more than 30 years have devoted themselves to developing and utilizing ocean resources, safeguarding national rights and interests, and dedicating themselves to the ocean cause. He suggested that the research results be compiled and actively submitted for relevant awards in the ocean field so as to recognize the researchers who have made contributions. He encouraged everyone to keep strengthening their sense of mission and responsibility, keep pace with the development of the nation’s ocean technology, and continue striving to develop and utilize ocean mineral resources.
Before the visit, Vice Administrator Sun attended the founding meeting of the overall project group and chief designer group of the national key research and development program project “Deep-Sea Polymetallic Nodule Mining Trial Project,” and presented letters of appointment to the project’s chief designers. CRIMM leads the project’s “underwater conveying system development” task, with deputy general manager Li Maolin serving as the task’s chief designer. CRIMM is also participating in three other tasks: “overall technology integration, surface support system and sea trials,” “seabed nodule collection and navigation and positioning system development,” and “environmental survey and environmental impact assessment.”
