Pangkalpinang, 7 August 2026. PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk has issued an emergency disaster declaration reporting a violent protest by mining community groups in the Belitung region on 7 August 2026.
Time and place of the incident
The incident took place between 08:00 and 14:30 Western Indonesian Time at the Production Supervision Unit (Wasprod) office of PT Timah Tbk in Lenggang Village, Gantung District, East Belitung Regency, and at the GBT tin ore warehouse.
Chronology of the incident
- In the morning, hundreds of miners, ranging from mine workers to housewives, gathered and held an initial consolidation at the Point One campground in Gantung District, East Belitung Regency.
- The crowd then moved in growing numbers toward the Production Supervision Unit (Wasprod) office of PT Timah Tbk in Lenggang Village, Gantung District, filling the site. In their speeches they demanded solutions to the collapse in tin prices, the difficulty of accessing sales channels, and the limited purchasing funds available at collection points.
- The situation then escalated into arson, which burned the front section and surrounding area of the PT Timah Tbk Wasprod office.
- After burning the office area, the crowd continued in convoy for approximately 600 metres to the GBT tin ore warehouse, which was also set on fire, producing thick black smoke, and was looted.
Response measures taken by the company
- The company has activated its Emergency Response Plan and confirmed that all employees are safe.
- Rapid measures have been taken through evacuation, securing the location together with the authorities, and recovery efforts.
- There were no fatalities, and operational activities have not yet returned to normal in the Belitung region.
- The company is formulating policy quickly and appropriately to address the demands raised by the protest.
- The company is coordinating with the regional leadership forum (Forkopimda), shareholders, and other related parties.
