Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey Approved to Establish Guangdong Key Laboratory for Deep-Sea Drilling Technology

The Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology has published its notice of proposed 2025 Guangdong provincial key laboratory projects, under which the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory for Deep-Sea Drilling Technology, an application led by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, has been formally approved for establishment. The laboratory is intended to support the development of Guangdong’s marine economy and China’s broader maritime and science and technology strategies.

The laboratory will focus on the major needs of securing deep-sea energy and resource supply and of developing frontier technologies and high-end equipment and instruments. It will bring together leading domestic institutions to work on deep-sea drilling technology, forming an integrated model spanning government, industry, academia, research and application. Research will concentrate on three directions: deep-sea drilling equipment and technology development, geophysical instruments and testing technology, and deep-sea drilling processes and applications. The goals include mastering key technologies and equipment, building a deep-sea drilling technology innovation system, advancing the industrialization of deep-sea energy and resource development in natural gas hydrate, deep-water oil and gas, polymetallic nodules and deep-sea rare earths, taking a leading role in international ocean scientific drilling, building a core national strategic science and technology capability in deep-sea drilling, and supporting the deep-sea drilling industry and regional economic development.
