From February 10 to 12, 2020, the International Workshop on Capacity Development, Resources and Needs, a preparatory meeting for the first part of the 26th session of the International Seabed Authority, was held in Kingston, Jamaica. At the request of the National Deep Sea Center, Lee Jihyun, Director of the ISA’s Office of Environmental Management and Mineral Resources, and Jiang Jun, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the International Seabed Authority, jointly delivered a keynote presentation to the meeting on the background, development and future prospects of the China-ISA Joint Training and Research Centre (JTRC).

The presentation introduced the international legal and policy background behind the establishment of the joint centre and China’s position and vision for international cooperation in international seabed affairs, and described in detail the centre’s work objectives, organizational structure and responsibilities, work content and future plans. Through an electronic questionnaire, the centre also broadly solicited views and suggestions from the international community on its training, research and other work.

The presentation and discussion gave ISA members a deeper understanding of the joint centre and won broader international recognition and support for its future work and development.
