Invitation to a scoping consultation regarding planned operations to recover manganese nodules on the continental shelf
SOM AB, Scandinavian Ocean Minerals, plans to apply for a permit to recover manganese nodules, which contain a number of different metals, on the continental shelf.
The project offers a solution that over time can meet part of Europe’s future need for minerals. This means the operation can help increase the EU’s degree of self-sufficiency in critical raw materials.
The extraction area now in question lies in the Bothnian Bay, within the Swedish economic zone but outside the territorial limit, approximately 70 kilometres south-east of Skelleftea in Vasterbotten County.
The planned operation requires a permit under the Continental Shelf Act, and other regulations may also apply.
The consultation documentation can be downloaded here.
